Today we are visiting the Banda islands in Indonesia. The islands have an interesting history in spice production and are surrounded by an incredible marine environment.
The islands have 20,000 inhabitants as well as an undeveloped waste management system.
We will be talking to Dr. Mareike Huhn. Mareike, who has a doctorate in marine biology, organizes a project to collect and dispose of waste to prevent it landing in the coral reefs surrounding the islands.
Plastics are collected and sent to a recycling facility or put through a pyrolysis machine. The resulting fuel is used to power the boat which collects waste from the various island communities.
